Isco Alarcón’s debut was not enough to lift Sevilla to a first victory in the Spanish league. Sevilla remained winless after a 1-1 draw at home against Valladolid. The visitors took the lead with a goal by Anuar Mohamed in the 80th before Sevilla equalized through Karim Rekik in the 86th. Isco arrived after his contract with Real Madrid was not renewed at the end of last season and came off the bench in the 69th minute. Sevilla had opened with a 2-1 loss at Osasuna. Valladolid lost 3-0 to Villarreal at home in its opener.
A man who shot one classmate to death and wounded three others five years ago in a Washington state high school, apologized to his victims before he was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. Caleb Sharpe, who was 15 at the time of the 2017 shootings at Freeman High School, pleaded guilty earlier this year in Spokane County Superior Court. The 20-year-old Sharpe showed no emotion as Superior Court Judge Michael Price handed down a sentence Friday that was longer than what prosecutors had requested. He will get credit for the nearly five years he has already been in custody. Prior to sentencing, Sharpe apologized to his victims in his first public comments since his arrest five years ago.
Authorities say a young mother is the third member of her family to die in a gas explosion at her Missouri home. Twenty-two-year-old Myranda Gale Golden was hurt Monday when her home in the far southern Missouri town of Wyatt erupted in flames and was taken to a burn unit in Memphis, Tennessee, for treatment. Wyatt is about 130 miles northeast of Memphis. The Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office in Missouri said in a news release that it was notified Friday that she had died. She was the mother of a 3-year-old who died Thursday and her significant other, Corey Coleman, died in the immediate aftermath of the blast. Seven others remain hospitalized in stable condition.
MIAMI — A Miami firefighter was fired Friday after the department determined he was the author of a callous Instagram post about the shooting death of a Miami-Dade officer that outraged many officers and drew a formal complaint from the police union.
MINNEAPOLIS — Separate federal raids in the Twin Cities and Rochester this week yielded the seizure of dozens of firearms — including devices to turn them into machine guns — and the takedown of a large-scale meth trafficking group, U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger said Friday.
In a victory for Georgia’s Republican governor, a federal judge has reinstated a work requirement in the state’s plan to expand Medicaid coverage to more low-income residents. U.S. District Judge Lisa Godbey Wood said the Biden administration’s decision to revoke approval of the work requirement and a related Georgia proposal to charge some Medicaid recipients monthly premiums was arbitrary and capricious. The work requirement was approved by then-President Donald Trump’s administration, but the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Centers announced last month that it was revoking approval of that plan and the premium requirement. An email after hours to CMS was not immediately returned.

New York's inspector general says a state trooper should have been disciplined for being romantically involved with a daughter of Andrew Cuomo while he served on the former governor’s security detail. The watchdog report released Friday comes more than two years after the relationship was discovered by top police brass and former Trooper Dane Pfeiffer was transferred to a post about 150 miles north of the governor’s mansion in Albany. The inspector general's report does not conclude Cuomo did anything wrong but faults state police for not following their own procedures after finding out about the relationship.
Rookie Christopher Morel and Patrick Wisdom each hit two-run homers and the Chicago Cubs topped the Milwaukee Brewers 8-7 for their fourth straight win. Morel’s drive down the left-field line in the sixth inning put the Cubs ahead for good in a seesaw game on a warm day with the wind blowing out at Wrigley Field. Nick Madrigal had three hits and scored twice for Chicago. Milwaukee’s Andrew McCutchen connected for his third homer in two days and Hunter Renfroe launched a majestic two-run drive off the video board in left. Rowdy Tellez added a solo shot for the Brewers, who entered three games behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central and one game out of the final NL wild-card spot.
RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina’s state legislature was unconstitutionally gerrymandered to the extent that lawmakers may have lacked the authority to claim to represent the people, when they passed new constitutional amendments in 2018, the N.C. Supreme Court ruled Friday.
Major League Soccer’s All-Star Game against Liga MX counterparts, an expanded Leagues Cup competition next year and a series of women’s matches this summer all aim to reach across the border. For MLS, that means tapping into the sizable Liga MX fan base in the United States. On the women’s side, it’s about growing the game overall. The alliance between the U.S. and Mexico will only grow as the nations prepare to serve as cohosts with Canada of the 2026 World Cup.

Florian Tardieu equalized with a penalty in the 39th before Nicolas Tagliafico restored Lyon’s lead in the 47th. Tetê then scored two minutes later and he wrapped up the win with his second goal in the 75th.

When you awake to a dreary day, it puts you in a bit of a mood. Especially when you’re a journalist, which for some of us is essentially a synonym for grumpy cynic. Considering we’re still more than four months way from Festivus and the annual Airing of the Grievances, let’s see if there’s room for a new summer tradition. Five Things That Are Bugging Me. In no particular order of irritation, they are Deshaun Watson, Scott Frost, parents who are poor losers, LIV Golf and the Big Ten's massive media deal.

Urban Meyer is returning to Fox’s “Big Noon Saturday” college football pregame show after his NFL coaching career lasted less than one full season. The network announced Meyer is rejoining the show he was part of for its first two seasons. After resigning as Ohio State’s coach after the 2018 season, Meyer worked as analyst for the studio show in 2019 and 2020. He was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars as coach in January 2021, but he lasted just 13 games. He was fired in December with a 2-11 record.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Pro-reproductive rights organizations including Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union on Friday took their challenge of Florida’s 15-week abortion ban to the Florida Supreme Court, asking the court to hear their argument and block the law.
Sixteen more states are asking to weigh in on the U.S. Department of Justice’s lawsuit against Idaho over its strict abortion ban. The Justice Department sued the Republican-led state of Idaho earlier this month, saying the abortion ban set to take effect next week violates a federal law requiring Medicaid-funded hospitals to provide “stabilizing treatment” to patients experiencing medical emergencies. The Biden administration says that includes emergency abortion care. In court documents filed Friday, 16 states, including Indiana, Montana and Texas, characterized the federal government’s guidelines as conditions for a grant, and said they do not have the power to preempt state law. Twenty states sided with the federal government in another brief earlier this week.
Georgia lawmakers are considering changes to how the state funds K-12 public schools. State Senate Majority Leader Mike Dugan promises nothing “dire and ominous” will come from possible changes. The state's Quality Basic Education formula was created in 1985 when Gov. Joe Frank Harris was governor. Those who seek changes in the $10 billion formula argue that changes in education mean the formula need to be altered. The state has fully funded the formula for four of the last five years after 16 years of cuts to balance the state budget. At least three previous attempted overhauls of QBE have faltered, producing few significant changes.
Sen. Joe Manchin says he pays no heed to criticism when making decisions what’s best for West Virginia. The conservative Democrat spoke Friday at a roundtable about his office's outsized role in drafting the economic package signed by U.S. President Joe Biden. He offered a key vote needed to pass the Democrats’ flagship climate and health care bill in the 50-50 Senate. Manchin says that made him a target of criticism from the “far left” and environmental activists but also from the fossil fuel industry. Manchin says his votes can make him both “the hero and the villain" in a 24-hour period but says he can take the criticism.
