Across the world, toll on the highways are mainly paid by something called ‘vignettes’. These are essentially prepaid toll passes which have to be stuck on to the windscreen of cars and at a specific location. They are available freely and in various denominations. In India, a similar kind of system is being incorporated in form of the FASTag. The plan has been brewing for some time now and till date, most toll booths across the nation came with a single lane where motorists could pay toll in cash. From today though this option will no longer be available and here is our guide to how to get the tag immediately and the norms associated with it.
The official way of getting a FASTag is to apply for the same via your bank or digital payment apps like PAYTM. The process is to upload your vehicle number and registered owner ID proofs online. Then once the payment is made, one can expect the tag to be delivered at desired address.
The best way to get your tag fast is to get to a toll booth nearby. Most banks and digital payment sources have created temporary booths where people have been designated to sell the tags. The representative will need details of the vehicle which include the registration certificate and ID proof of owner. If the vehicle is company registered then the user can also provide his or her own ID.
FASTags are generally associated with the registration number of a vehicle. The tag can also be altered with different registration numbers. However it will always cater to one registration number at one time. Be careful not to deploy one tag for multiple numbers as it can call for a fine.
Till date there was an option of getting through by paying in cash. The government had also made it an option for no FASTag cars to pass through tag lanes by paying double the toll. However as per notice from the authorities, toll booths will no longer take payment in cash.
The FASTag comes as a sticker which is to be stuck on to the windshield of the car from inside. The ideal location is to stick it in the middle of the windshield right behind the inside rear view mirror. Once fixed there is little or no chance of tampering or removing the tag.
The FASTag once active can be recharged digitally through any bank account or payments application. All what is needed is the registration number of the car. Once recharged, the registered mobile number will get an update.
