Hoodlums on Sunday invaded the Bulumkutu GSM Village, aka Jagwal, in Maiduguri, Borno State, where they reportedly robbed a point-of-sale operator, Yusuf Chairman, of an undisclosed sum of money.
The victim told PUNCH Metro that the robbers, who were in uniform, fired continuously before attacking his shop.
He said, “I was in my shop around 8pm when we suddenly heard gunshots. We didn’t suspect anything because we were already used to such sporadic shootings, especially from security personnel. So, we thought it was one of such random shootings.
“Before I knew it, one of the shooters stormed my shop, pointing a gun at me and yelling at me to hand over all the money I had in the store.
“While I was trying to hand over the money to him, onlookers closed in on them and it became a rowdy scene.
“In the process, one of the robbers, who was not holding any gun, rushed into the shop and made away with my bag of money and all the money on the table, while the other two were already in a tricycle, waiting for him.
“They kept on shooting while they escaped on the tricycle and some youths attempted to follow them. But two of the youths were shot in the chest and in the buttocks. The young boy that was shot in the chest died instantly, while the other boy is receiving treatment in a hospital.”
The victim noted that two other PoS shops were robbed by the hoodlums on the day of the incident. Read Also Gunmen invade Anambra community, kidnap farmer, shoot sonSit-at-home: Gunmen kill three in Enugu, Delta, markets shutGunmen kill Ebonyi council chairman’s brother, sons, guard
The incident was reported at the Bulumkutu Police Division.
The Commissioner of Police, Borno State, Abdu Umar, confirmed the incident, adding that detectives were on the trail of the suspects.
He said, “There was a reported case of robbery from the Bulumkutu police divisional office in which a youth was shot dead and another sustained injuries from shots fired by the fleeing robbers.
“Unfortunately, the robbers escaped in an unmarked tricycle, but the police have begun a thorough investigation and hopefully we will arrest the culprits soon because eyewitnesses have given useful information that will help in apprehending them.”
